Background of the Study
Nyesom Wike, appointed as the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister in 2023, has prioritized urban renewal projects aimed at modernizing Abuja’s suburban areas. Kuje, a satellite town in the FCT, has been identified as one of the key areas for development under Wike’s administration. Over the years, Kuje has faced challenges associated with rapid population growth, inadequate infrastructure, and lack of basic services. Wike’s urban renewal projects are designed to address these issues by enhancing infrastructure, upgrading housing, and improving the living standards of residents.

Under Wike’s leadership, there has been a focus on improving roads, sanitation, healthcare facilities, and public amenities in Kuje. These projects are expected to reduce the strain on the central areas of Abuja while promoting more balanced urban growth in the suburbs. By focusing on Kuje, Wike aims to transform the town into a more habitable and economically viable area, capable of supporting the growing population in the FCT.

This study seeks to evaluate the impact of Nyesom Wike’s urban renewal projects in Kuje. It will assess the effectiveness of these initiatives in addressing the infrastructural and socio-economic challenges faced by the town. The research will also explore the implications of these projects for urban planning and development in Abuja’s peripheral areas.

Statement of the Problem
Kuje, like many suburban areas in the Federal Capital Territory, has faced significant challenges related to urbanization, including insufficient infrastructure, poor housing conditions, and limited access to basic services. The urban renewal projects spearheaded by Nyesom Wike aim to address these issues, but their actual impact on the town’s development remains largely unexamined. This study will assess the outcomes of Wike’s initiatives, evaluating their success in transforming Kuje into a more sustainable and livable urban area.
